Zander's Great Big New York Family Quiz

Here are pictures of some of Zander's
favorite places in and around New York City,
together with some of the many wonderful friends
he traveled with.

How many places have you been to?

To make it more fun, your votes are weighted. You can see the scores in brackets after the choices. The maximum possible score (the "Z. score") is 60. If you are a member of the Veterans' Forum, you can use your Student Number to take the quiz. If you are a family friend, you can take the quiz with the number 0000.

1. Astoria Park (at the end of the N): Z. the first time we went there - "I want to see the neighborhood I lived in before I was born." Below you see Mommy's painting of Astoria Park.

A. Been there, done that! (2)
B. Nope, never been there!

2. The JFK Air Train (where you have to pay $5.00 to get on, and $5.00 to get off). Dad - "This is your ideal train chum. It just goes round and round in circles and never goes anywhere."

A. Been there, done that! (3)
B. Nope, never been there!

3. Flushing Meadow Park (Willets pt- Shea Stadium on the 7. Z's preferred method: take the G to Court Square and transfer to the 7 at Queensboro Plaza): Home of the Queens Museum, the Queens Zoo, and (as seen here) the Queens Hall of Science, and well worth the schlep from Brooklyn.

A. Been there, done that! (2)
B. Nope, never been there!

4. Woodlawn Cemeterey in the Bronx (at the end of the 4): We never did find Robert Moses' grave. Z. didn't like Moses because I showed him too many documentaries about him, and because I told him how building all those roads led to the decline of the subway. Z - "How could they?" Below you see Moses and his arch enemy the community planner Jane Jacobs, and Zander, who loved his trains with all of his heart.

A. Been there, done that! (3)
B. Nope, never been there!

5. The New York Botanical Gardens in the Bronx (take the B, D or the 4 to Bedford Park Boulevard).

A. Been there, done that! (2)
B. Nope, never been there!

6. Governors Island. Hundreds of years of military buildings, a spectacular overview of the nation's history. Go there by special ferry at weekends in summer, as we did, and you might even catch Shakespeare.

A. Been there, done that! (4)
B. Nope, never been there!

7. Orchard Beach, the Bronx (take the 6 to Pelham Bay Park and get the B12 bus). Another monument from Moses: like Coney Island only grander. Now restored to its original magnificence and augmented by a nature trail.

A. Been there, done that! (5)
B. Nope, never been there!

8. The Bronx Zoo (take the 2 to Bronx Park East). Only when it isn't too hot, too cold, or too crowded. Take in the view from the monorail.

A. Been there, done that! (2)
B. Nope, never been there!

9. The Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, especially when the blossoms are out in the Spring.

A. Been there, done that! (2)
B. Nope, never been there!

10. Keystone Park, home of family, and the Brooklyn Cyclones.

A. Been there, done that! (3)
B. Nope, never been there!

11. Coney Island, as long as we never rode back on the subway the same way we went.

A. Been there, done that! (2)
B. Nope, never been there!

12. The Far Rockaways (all the way out on the A, and then transfer to the S). Z. especially liked the journey from Howard Beach to Broad Channel, the biggest gap between stations in the system.

A. Been there, done that! (3)
B. Nope, never been there!

13. City Hall Park. So many stations, so many lines! Here in the park, eating lunch, before attending a protest against styrofoam on the steps of City Hall. Below class 206 before the styrofoam protest at City Hall.

A. Been there, done that! (5)
B. Nope, never been there!

14. The Staten Island Railroad (all the way from St. George to Tottenville). (5 points) We did this twice. One time we met a lady who said she'd never been so excited to arrive home as the day he announced the station. Here on a field trip on the Staten Island ferry.

A. Been there, done that! (5)
B. Nope, never been there!

15. The Grand Central Transit Museum Store. The best store on Earth. We bought almost everything they have to sell, more than once. Then we went and had ice cream in the Food Court. If we did this once, we did it 50 times. On a good day we would walk to Bryant Park and then get on the subway in Times Square.

A. Been there, done that! (2)
B. Nope, never been there!

16. The Museum of Natural History. Z. loved the cladygram, with Meryl Streep narrating the history of life on Earth. This was second only to his fascination with the many gift shops.

A. Been there, done that! (2)
B. Nope, never been there!

17. Jordan Schapiro's annual Fathers' Day music recital. Or any live music performance in New York (2 points). Walk through Red Hook to Jalopy. Below you see Jordan's students, and a class concert at PS29.

A. Been there, done that! (2)
B. Nope, never been there!

18. The Barnes & Noble in Union Square. Z. would go and find the assistants and tell them what he was looking for. Below you see Mommy's painting of Barnes & Noble in downtown Brooklyn.

A. Been there, done that! (3)
B. Nope, never been there!

19. Walking across the Manhattan Bridge in Chinatown. We did this when he was in the stroller, so later on, I made him do it on his own two feet (when he was usually more interested in the trains on the bridge than the view).

A. Been there, done that! (3)
B. Nope, never been there!

20. Hoboken Terminal (via the PATH to Exchange Place, and the Hudson-Bergen Light Railway). Z. loved this as he would direct the students on their Jersey City Field Trip.

A. Been there, done that! (5)
B. Nope, never been there!
